Anita Earls is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina, sworn in on January 1, 2019. She spent roughly three decades as a civil rights attorney litigating voting rights and other civil rights cases, founded the Durham-based Southern Coalition for Social Justice, and served as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division during the Clinton administration. She is a graduate of Williams College and Yale Law School.
Notable Achievements
- Seventh African American judge in the history of the Supreme Court of North Carolina and the ninth woman to serve on that court
- Founder and executive director of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, a civil rights legal advocacy organization in Durham, North Carolina
- Served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division
- Litigated voting rights and civil rights cases for approximately 30 years before joining the bench
