Roger L. Gregory is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the first African American to sit on that court. Born in Philadelphia in 1953, he earned a B.A. summa cum laude from Virginia State University and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, then practiced in Detroit and Richmond, co-founding the firm Wilder & Gregory with L. Douglas Wilder in 1982. He received a recess appointment from President Clinton in December 2000 and was nominated and confirmed under President George W. Bush in July 2001, and served as chief judge of the circuit from 2016 to 2023.
